What is pet acupuncture?
Pet acupuncture or animal acupuncture is the process of inserting needles into specific points of the body to produce a healing response. Acupuncture for dogs and cats can help relieve pain among other therapeutic effects.
How does acupuncture work?
Thin sterile needles are placed at specific points along mapped meridians (think “energy highways”) on the body. Stimulation from these acupoints travels along the meridians and restores the normal flow of Qi and blood, allowing organs to return to balance. Modern research on the mechanism of action of acupuncture has shown that the stimulation of acupoints causes the release of the body’s own opioid-like substances from the central nervous system which helps relieve pain. Stimulating the body’s natural opioid, neurotransmitter, and neurohormone systems result in a healing response (rebalancing) for the body. Modern medicine is still working to find evidence-based explanations for how this ancient healing practice works.
What is Qi?
Qi is the energy within the body. Qi is in all living creatures and affects all areas of well-being: spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical.
Is pet acupuncture scientifically proven to work?
Clinical research shows that acupoints have a high concentration of free nerve endings, mast cells, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. Studies show stimulation of these points results in the measurable release of neurotransmitters such as beta-endorphins and serotonin which have natural positive effects on the body.
